On February 2, 2024, FineVT Robotics LAB, in collaboration with the National Institute for International Cooperation (MUM-T) at the Sejong National Research Complex, successfully completed the world’s first long-range scientific expedition flight of an AI-powered VTOL unmanned aerial platform integrated with quantum cryptography-based secure communications.

This milestone marks a significant breakthrough in autonomous aerospace systems, combining artificial intelligence, advanced robotic control, and quantum-secure communication technology to enable safe and reliable unmanned operations in extreme environments such as Antarctica.

The project was carried out under a multi-institutional R&D initiative supported by the National Intelligence Service Agency (NIA) through the SK Broadband (SKB)–SK Telecom (SKT)–FineVT Consortium, in partnership with the Korea Polar Research Institute (KOPRI) as part of its Polar Scientific Exploration Equipment Development Program.

As a key consortium member, FineVT Robotics LAB developed the core avionics, autonomous flight control systems, secure mission communications architecture, and motion control technologies for the FineVT FEW-040-KOPRI VTOL unmanned aerial platform.

Quantum Cryptography-Based Secure Autonomous Flight

A major innovation of this project is the integration of quantum cryptography-based secure communication technology, designed to protect mission-critical UAV command, control, and data transmission from interception, spoofing, or cyber intrusion.

By combining hardware-based encryption modules, AI-driven autonomous navigation, and secure long-range communication links, FineVT Robotics LAB established a next-generation unmanned aviation security framework suitable for defense, public safety, and scientific exploration applications.

This secure architecture ensures:

  • End-to-end encrypted command and control
  • Protection against signal interception and spoofing attacks
  • Secure transmission of real-time sensor and mission data
  • Trusted communication resilience in harsh and remote environments

Advanced BVLOS Capability Through Precision Navigation

Using high-precision GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) positioning technology integrated with INS-based navigation systems, FineVT Robotics LAB successfully enabled BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) operations under the demanding environmental conditions of Antarctica.

The company collaborated with global GNSS experts and regulatory authorities to develop an advanced UAV flight control system fully compliant with modern autonomous navigation and positional awareness requirements.

Proven Autonomous Antarctic Flight Performance

In June 2022, FineVT Robotics LAB successfully completed a fully autonomous round-trip electronic takeoff and landing mission between King Sejong Station in Antarctica and nearby islands, covering a maximum operational distance of over 10 km.

The mission demonstrated:

  • Real-time secure mission data transmission up to 50 km
  • Fully autonomous takeoff and landing
  • AI-assisted adaptive flight control
  • Hybrid-engine VTOL capability
  • Stable operation in extreme polar weather conditions

The successful Antarctic mission validated the practical feasibility of long-range autonomous UAV deployment for remote scientific support and mission logistics.

A Next-Generation Mission-Critical UAV Platform

The FineVT integrated solution combines multiple advanced technologies:

  • AI-based autonomous flight control
  • Quantum cryptography-based secure communications
  • Long-range encrypted data-link transmission
  • Hybrid VTOL propulsion system
  • Mission-critical resilience for remote operations

This achievement represents a major advancement in unmanned systems designed for military ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance), critical infrastructure security, and polar scientific exploration missions worldwide.

Commercialization and Future Deployment

The 4K ultra-high-definition secure video transmission technology developed through this project is currently being commercialized by SKB Convergence Co., Ltd. (SKB, SKT, FineVT Robotics LAB).

The technology is already being applied in various public and industrial projects, including:

  • Korean National Police Agency
  • Incheon Metropolitan City Robot Land
  • Korea Unmanned Systems Business Group

FineVT Robotics LAB remains committed to advancing secure autonomous aviation through the convergence of AI, robotics, and quantum cryptography, delivering innovative solutions for defense, public safety, and global scientific missions.
